چکیده

Electron-microscope observations indicate that the single nuclear division of sporulating yeasts which form 2-spored asci resembles, in several aspects, the nuclear behaviour during sporulation of the more common 4-spored yeasts. Specifically the parental nucleolus remains behind in the ascus cytoplasm, a characteristic nucleolus-associatcd spherical structure is formed, and the nucleus divides by budding rather than by elongation and medial constriction.

Outer plaque assembly and spore encapsulation are defective during sporulation of adenylate cyclase-deficient mutants of Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Sporulation in diploid cells homozygous for the cyr1-2 mutation of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae was examined. This mutation causes a defect in adenylate cyclase and temperature-sensitive arrest in the G1 phase of the mitotic cell cycle. The cyr1-2/cyr1-2 diploid cells were able to initiate meiotic divisions, but produced predominantly two-spored asci at the restrictive temperature. Temper...

Preferential Occurrence of Nonsister Spores in Two-Spored Asci of SACCHAROMYCES CEREVISIAE: Evidence for Regulation of Spore-Wall Formation by the Spindle Pole Body.

Yeast cells subjected to a reversible thermal arrest of meiosis yielded progressively fewer spores per ascus as the arrest was extended. Dissection of two-spored asci by a newly developed method that prevents selection of false asci revealed that the spores were not a random sample of the haploid meiotic products. Most, if not all, pairs of spores contain nonsister products of the reductional d...

Recessive lethal amber suppressors in yeast.

Recessive lethal amber suppressor mutations have been isolated in a diploid strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Diploids carrying these suppressors upon sporulation yield asci with only two live spores, both lacking the suppressor. At least two classes of recessive lethal suppressors exist. Aneuploid strains carrying one wild type and one suppressor locus have been isolated and used in mapping ...

Schizosaccharomyces japonicus Yeast Poised to Become a Favorite Experimental Organism for Eukaryotic Research

Both budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae and fission yeast Schizosaccahromyces pombe have been very popular organisms used for biological research with eukaryotes for many decades. Judging from the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces japonicus DNA sequence determined 2 years ago, this species is evolutionarily very much unrelated to the commonly used yeasts for research. Indicating evolutionar...

Ordered Linear Tetrads Are Produced by the Sporulation of Newly Formed Zygotes of Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Diploid Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains normally sporulate to produce tetrahedral unordered asci containing four spores (tetrads). We report that when newly formed zygotes are subjected to the same sporulation conditions, they form predominantly linear ordered tetrads. We show that the two spores from each end of such a linear tetrad invariably contain nonsister centromeres. Spore viability, r...
